Lead, silver, zinc, iron and copper were mined on an industrial scale from the late 19th century in the bizarre-looking ruins of the abandoned mines of Mazarrón. Until the 20th century, new techniques were used to mine ores such as zinc and lead. From the extensive systems of shafts and tunnels, which are now slowly decaying, overburden lies on the earth’s surface and explains the erosion of the soil and the surroundings. The quantities of excavated material on the surface are now a concrete threat to the surrounding environment and groundwater. The mines in the Murcia region of Spain are around 25 km from Cartagena. In 2005, the Mazarrón mines were declared a cultural heritage site.
